Welcome to Genesee County

Genesee County, NY is a visitor’s delight known for its fun, location and value. The late summer and fall months bring out the essence of our wonderful region.

Music is in the air! Come see the best in what the entertainment world has to offer at Darien Lake Performing Arts Center all summer long. Music lovers enjoy downtown Batavia’s Jackson Square concert series every Friday night from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

For a relaxing fall day, visit a farmer’s market or pick your own berries – then grab a recipe and use them! Apples, blackberries, grapes, pears, and raspberries are available for purchase or u-pick from August through October. Stop by fresh farm stands such as Downtown Batavia Public Market (Tues, Thurs and Friday) and LeRoy’s Farmers’ Market (Saturday mornings).  While you’re in the “farm” state of mind, check out National Alpaca Farm Day, September 24-25th at Genesee County’s participating six alpaca farms.

Batavia Downs live horse racing season is back! Racing action primarily occurs on Wednesdays and Friday through Sundays, with start times varying. Make it a fun night by enjoying dinner or cocktails overlooking the track at the Clubhouse and Rail Bar. After you cheer your winning horses over the finish line, visit the newly renovated Batavia Downs Gaming for over 785 games, entertainment and more. The new 84-room, trackside Hotel at Batavia Downs Gaming features  well-appointed rooms/suites that are connected to the track and gaming facility.

From September 7-10, the Annual WNY Gas & Steam Engine Rally will take place in Alexander. The show will feature over 1,000 pieces of equipment, including gas and steam engines, gas tractors and antique agriculture and construction equipment.

If you like things that go bump in the night, visit the spooky Rolling Hills Asylum – the second most haunted place in the United States! Tours range from an hour and a half historical tour (only on Sundays), to a two-hour flashlight tour, or four and eight-hour ghost hunts. Originally the Genesee County Poor Farm, Rolling Hills was home to orphans, the physically handicapped, mentally ill, and even criminals. Some would argue it still is a home to these forgotten souls.

Late summer and fall is the perfect time to be out exploring either the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge or the Genesee County Park & Forest. Both outdoor recreation and observation areas feature miles of hiking trails, places for viewing animals or plants, and education programs for all-ages. Worth the trip alone, the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge and Genesee County Park & Forest both have wonderful interpretative centers where you can learn so much about the world around you.

Holiday Hollow in Corfu, NY offers an atmosphere similar to a Renaissance Fair with comedic performances on outside stages (moved inside during inclement weather). The Halloween-themed shows are performed in a recreated “English” village and are suitable for all ages.  Performances take place every Saturday and Sunday during the month of October.
