On August 20-22, 2010 The Dunkirk Lighthouse and Veteran’s Park Museum will hold their 9th annual Lighthouse Festival.

This year we are co-sponsoring an Irish concert in conjunction with the Dunkirk Historical Society and Adam’s Art Gallery. The free concert will take place on Friday evening August 20th starting at 4:00. It will include an internationally known Irish rock band from Vancouver called the “Town Pants”. The band combines aspects of Irish traditional, acoustic pop, roots Americana, even Australian and Mexican influences to create their own unique brand of “West Coast Celtic”. Armed with a pawnshop’s worth of musical instruments, The Town Pants play songs that appeal to young and old alike. The music of The Town Pants remains in the heart and head long after the music stops. Check out their website at www.thetownpants.com Additional entertainment will be provided by The Outsiders and Irish Dancers. Food and beverages will be sold all evening.

On Saturday and Sunday, the lighthouse festival will offer guided tours of the lighthouse keeper’s house and tower (no flip flops or sandals allowed in the tower). Archeologists have been digging up the base to the original tower built in 1826. They are working diligently, moving the base temporarily while work is being done to restore the property eroded away by the powerful storms that move across Lake Erie.

SCULPTOR TO EXHIBIT WORK AT RTPI

The Roger Tory Peterson Institute presents works by sculptor Mary Taylor from
July 17 – August 19. Entitled Mary Taylor Sculpture: Nature from Steel, the exhibit will feature approximately 16 original, three-dimensional pieces by the artist. An elected member of the Society of Animal Artists, Mary Taylor has been welding steel and casting bronze into unique sculptural pieces that have wowed with their startlingly realistic forms.

Taylor attended the American School of Craftsmen, Rochester Institute of Technology, followed by the University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA and American University, Washington, DC. She has also completed coursework through Woodstock School of Art and Nazareth College, among others.

Taylor has participated in over fifty exhibitions nationally, including solo, two-person and group exhibitions. She has received more than a dozen awards for her work, including the Artists for Conservation Medal of Excellence in 2009 for her sculpture “The Filly.” Taylor’s sculptures range in size from a five-foot tall giraffe to an eight-inch ladybug, and sizes in between.

In describing her work, Taylor says, “The wildlife sculptures I create are more than art made of steel or bronze rods. They represent a powerful connection to and understanding of the grand forces of nature – the natural movement and growth that are so vital for our imaginations to grow and reach out towards our dreams…”

There will be a chance to meet the artist at the Institute’s 25th Anniversary Wine & Dine Benefit event on Wednesday, July 21, from 5:30 – 8:30 pm. There are still reservations available for this event and are required by July 14. Cost is $60 per person, $100 for Tickets for Two, or $200 for Patron Tickets for Two. Tickets are available at the event for an additional $10 per person. For more information about Mary Taylor, please visit her website at www.marytaylorsculpture.com. Visit www.rtpi.org or call 716-665-2473 for more information about this or other events and exhibits at the Institute. What Are Sky Lanterns?

Sky Lanterns have been an Asian tradition for hundreds of years, the trend has spread to the UK & the rest of Europe, and now the Sky Lanterns have come to America. Sky Lanterns are a great replacement for balloons and other traditional decorations adding excitement to every event.

Sky Lanterns or as some call them UFO Balloons will fly up to one mile high and travel for miles in whatever direction the wind decides. Sky Lanterns fly until the fuel source dies out and they gently float to the ground. They are very easy to light, easy to use, and there is no assembly required. Sky Lanterns are made from organic materials; hand crafted from fire retardant paper and are biodegradable so there are no worries for the environment.

Create a dreamlike display by launching a single Sky Lantern and or in groups! They are an excellent addition to Fireworks, Weddings, Festivals, Fairs or anything else you can think of where you want to put on an impressive, yet uncommon display. Definitely an Unforgettable Experience for old or young, everyone loves Sky Lanterns. For special pricing go to www.TheSkyLantern.com/special. For questions or call (888) 449-3586 and please mention that you saw it in Explore New York.
