33rd Annual Falling Leaves Festival
October 1 - 3, 2010
This year Salamanca is celebrating its 33rd Annual Falling Leaves Festival. In late1975, members of various Salamanca fraternal and service organizations were concerned that civic pride was declining and decided to form a committee to rectify the situation, so Paul D. Formica, with his wife Sandra, formed a committee which was called the Salamanca Positive Action Committee (SPAC). The mission was to develop ideas to restore civic pride, improve the look of Main Street and attract new businesses to the area. One of the ideas the SPAC discussed was holding a festival in the fall, which became known as the Falling Leaves Festival. The Chamber is confident that this year’s festivities will be as spectacular and memorable and the first year was.
You will not want to miss all the excitement of the 33rd Annual Falling Leaves Festival! For more information and a complete schedule of events, please contact the Salamanca Area Chamber of Commerce at 716-945-2034 or visit www.salamancachamber.org.
New York’s Amish Trail
New York’s Amish Trail in Cattaraugus County is not your typical Amish community; there is no commercialization here like you find in the larger familiar Amish areas in the Northeast. This pastoral settlement consists of an Old Order Amish people that continue to live out their day to day lives the old-fashioned way. No modern conveniences such as electric and motorized vehicles are used to carry out their responsibilities for the day.
As you travel the country highways, you will see hand-painted signs depicting the commodity that each Amish business has. Follow those hand-painted signs down the side roads to their business where you can purchase anything from toys to quilts, lumber, furniture, candy and more. Each of the Amish craftsmen specializes in a product, so make an adventure out of locating the Amish Shop that sells what you are looking to purchase.
Amish Trail maps are available at designated businesses located in Gowanda, South Dayton, Randolph, East Otto, Salamanca and in between.
When you “get lost” on New York’s Amish Trail, you will find yourself surrounded by beautiful scenery in a peaceful atmosphere that will calm the noise in your soul and help you refresh and revisit life at a slower pace. In the spring, you will see the farmers plowing their fields with horses; in summer, barefoot children will be hoeing in the gardens with their mothers while the fathers are harvesting the hay in the fields, again using their horses. Autumn paints a gorgeous scene along the hills and valleys of New York’s Amish Trail and this is the opportunity to see the colors of autumn as well as the corn and oat shocks standing in the fields after being harvested by the farmers.
No matter the time of year you visit, remember that Amish shops are closed on Sundays, as are many of the “non-Amish” businesses.
We invite you to tour the Amish community located in the Enchanted Mountains of Cattaraugus County along New York’s Amish Trail. Be sure to visit the non-Amish businesses that offer you modern day conveniences to enhance your visit. For more information, please call 1-800-331-0543 or visit our website at www.NYAmishTrail.com.

Zoar Valley Canoe & Rafting - Fun For All Ages
If you’re searching for adventure, Zoar Valley Canoe & Rafting can help provide some outdoor fun for both spring and summer. Now in their 28th year, they offer an introduction to white water rafting as well as their normal trips.
The introduction to white water rafting takes place on a 6-mile section of Cattaraugus Creek. With I and II class rapids at normal water level, this trip is suitable for most ages, especially children.
To experience Western New York’s hidden gem at a more strenuous level, white water rafting on the mighty Cattaraugus, through Zoar Valley, is the way to go. With highest water levels generally in mid-March and early April, you’ll view rugged cliffs hundreds of feet high, waterfalls (both free falling and hidden by old growth stands of oak, hemlock and tulip), nesting bald eagles and you’ll experience the finest white water west of the Adirondacks. The season runs from Mid-March through May and the ten-mile trip takes approximately two to four hours to complete.
The Zoar Valley Xstream, which begins in June, is an extension of the spring white water rafting trip through Zoar. The water will be much lower but also much warmer! You will float the quiet sections, run the rapids that are available, portage through the low sections (carry the rafts), swim, hike and enjoy the pristine beauty of Zoar Valley all the way through.
With the guaranteed water release, summer on the Salmon River is a hot spot for class I, II and III white water action. This river, with its six mile run, is excellent for 2 person inflatables (Duckys). The Salmon River is located in Pulaski, NY just North of Syracuse. Scheduled guided trips are planned on specific dates July through September. Camping is available with these excursions.
For information, reservations and special group rates, contact Zoar Valley Canoe & Rafting at 1-800-724-0696, raftzvc@yahoo.com or check the website at www.zoarvalleyrafting.com.
